The American Board of Trial Advocates (“ABOTA”), one of the largest American organisations of lawyers and judges, will hold its International Meeting on 14 May, in Lisbon. Miranda is sponsoring the event, which will bring together American and Portuguese attorneys and judges in the country’s capital. Several local and internationally renowned speakers will be attending the meeting, including Latvian justices and attorneys.

“It is an honour for Miranda to sponsor the first ABOTA meeting in Portugal, especially in the year that the association celebrates its 50th anniversary. ABOTA is a prestigious organisation that has played a remarkable role in the defence and promotion of the rule of law and in educating the general public on the role of advocates and judges in a democratic society”, says Agostinho Pereira de Miranda, Miranda Chairman. “This Meeting will be dedicated to the debate on the similarities and differences in the Portuguese and American legal systems and will therefore be a great opportunity for the exchange of experiences among law professionals of both countries”, concludes Miranda Chairman.

The Meeting will be held at the Catholic University Law School (Lisbon campus) and will open with a plenary session on the “Portuguese, Latvian and American legal systems: The relationship between the judges, attorneys and the Bar Associations”. The morning agenda will also include: “Ethics and Rules of Professional Conduct for Judges and Attorneys”, “Enforcement of Professional Discipline Against Judges and Attorneys” and “Modernization of the Court Systems and Accountability”. The second part of the event will feature a mock jury trial, which will be presided by Portuguese and American judges.
