Miranda held a Workshop on the "Compliance of the Portuguese Tax System with the EU Law" last 29 May at the Firm's facilities, in Lisbon. Present at this event was the reputed Tax specialist, Prof. Saldanha Sanches, who made a presentation on "The Jurisprudence of the European Court of Justice: Analysis of Recent Cases and Their Impact on the Portuguese Tax System".

The panel of speakers included Miranda Tax Department Lawyers Samuel Fernandes de Almeida and Paulino Brilhante Santos who addressed the following topics: " Potentially Inconsistent Rules with EU Law and Subsequent Legal Action" and "Future Evolution and Perspectives of Evolution of Both the Portuguese Tax System and the EU Legal System on Direct Taxation".  

According to Miranda Lawyer, Samuel Fernandes de Almeida “The growing uniformity within the EU at the tax level in conjunction with the increasingly meticulous analysis undergone by the European Court of Justice are making Member States give up part of their tax sovereignty and hence, the compatibility of the regimes of these Member States with the EU Law are increasingly questioned. Portugal is no exception and is compelled to follow through with this analysis in a more systematic manner as is the case of this workshop". Mr. Almeida added: “The intention is to bring this issue as well as the tax optimisation opportunities brought forth by the European Community Jusrisprudence to the attention of Portuguese companies. Furthermore, I must add that it is a great honour and a privilege to have the presence of Prof. Saldanha Sanches in an event such as this one in addition to the added value this represents for all those attending".
