João Luís Traça (born 1970), Partner. Graduate of the Lisbon Law School of the Portuguese Catholic University (1993). Admitted in 1995. Joined the Firm in 2002.
João completed his forth year of studies in Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Rouen (1991/92), in France, which allowed him to become fluent in French and be familiar with the French legal system. Following the completion of his law studies, João started his practice as a trainee in a small office in Lisbon, where he focused in corporate law and litigation.
After being admitted by the Portuguese Bar, João worked as a lawyer at Santiago Neves & Associados (1995-2002). During this period, in addition to his legal work, João had the opportunity to obtain management experience, as he was one of the members of the board of the third largest Internet Service Provider in Portugal at that time (1996-1999). Additionally, he was involved in the launching of the Internet World Show in Portugal (1999 and 2000). Due to these projects, João had the opportunity to become familiar not only with the Information Technology business but also with Intellectual Property, E-Commerce and other Internet related legal issues at a time when there were more questions than answers. For these reasons, João is regularly invited to speak on matters ranging from copyright to data protection.
In order to improve his knowledge on management and Information Technology-related issues, and to better serve his corporate clients, he obtained an MBA degree from the Lisbon Catholic University Management School (1999/2001).
In addition to his practice in the Firm, João was the President of the Intellectual Property and New Technologies standing commission of AIJA (International Association of Young Lawyers) (2002-2005).
João is a regular contributor to various newspapers and magazines.
He was ranked as an Expert in IT and Telecoms in the 2009 and 2010 editions of the European Legal Experts Guide.
João focuses his practice in the areas of IP, TMT, data protection and corporate law.
He is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
