Ricardo Alves Silva (born 1976), Partner. Graduate of the Lisbon University Law School (2000). Admitted in 2002. Joined the Firm in 2004.


Before joining the Firm, Ricardo was an associate at CERBA & Associados – Capitão Espanha, Rodrigues Bastos, Areia & Associados, focusing his practice in all areas of public law, including administrative and environmental law, urbanism, regulatory and expropriations. At CERBA & Associados, Ricardo worked on projects ranging from the drafting of environmental statutes to administrative litigation. At that time, he advised a number of public entities in large-scale land planning and redevelopment projects.


Since joining the Firm, Ricardo’s practice has focused mainly in advising oil and gas companies in projects and transactions in Africa. 


In December 2004 Ricardo became the first (and so far only) Portuguese Lawyer to represent a State before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg.


Ricardo attended the curricular program of the Master’s Degree in Juridical-Political Sciences at the Lisbon University Law School (2003).


He has been a lecturer on Expropriation Law seminars organised by the Portuguese Bar, writes articles on legal issues for national newspapers and was co-author of the Portuguese Chapter of the “International Comparative Legal Guide to Environmental Law 2005”. Ricardo has also been a regular contributor to articles on African oil and gas and land acquisition issues.


Between 2006 and 2008 Ricardo was head of the firm's office in Houston, US. In 2009 Ricardo returned to the Lisbon office, where he is currently responsible for coordinating the firm’s Houston and Timor-Leste practices.


Ricardo is an active member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN) and of the American Bar Association.


He is a national of both Portugal and Australia.


Ricardo is fluent in English.
